Drug Treatment Units
Living Free
Since 1997, CareNZ has been running – in conjunction with the Department of Corrections – Drug Treatment Programmes (DTU) in prisons.
What is a DTU? It is a separate unit away from the mainstream prison. Here, we run an intensive treatment programme that works on inmates’ alcohol and drugs issues – all in a supportive and caring environment.
The original DTU was launched in Arohata Women’s Prison back in 1997 and now CareNZ operates eight prison-based programmes throughout the country. Some of the prisons included in our drug treatment programme are:
- Spring Hill Prison
- Waikeria
- Hawke's Bay Prison
- Rimutaka Prison
- Christchurch Men's
- Otago
This programme has become the lifeline for many inmates who can begin their recovery from alcohol and/or drug addiction while still serving time. The programme is based on the Therapeutic Community (TC) model and the idea is as people in a TC find their own recovery they are able to model it to newer members.
CareNZ has worked alongside the Department of Corrections in facilitating our Drug Treatment Units and this support has been invaluable. It has also given many inmates around New Zealand the opportunity to address their issues around drugs and alcohol and give them hope of learning a new way of life when they get out.
