CARE NZ’S ROLE IS TO FIND SOLUTIONS FOR YOU WHICH MAKE SENSE

The direct financial cost, not to mention the human cost, of alcohol and drug abuse and dependence is huge to industry as well as society. It is conservatively estimated to be $180 million per year to employers and increasing with the increasing ease of supply.

Substance abuse can be the cause of absenteeism, accidents, injury, death, poor work quality and costly mistakes, reduced morale, productivity loss, staff turnover, co-worker disputes, property damage and theft.

Did you know that
  • collectively employers loose in vicinity of $4.6 billion in productivity due to absenteeism. The direct impact on business is an estimated average 8% of payroll with the indirect impact likely to be closer to 20%
  • employees take over 3.8 million days off work
  • up to 230,000 employees are at risk from alcohol and drug abuse related problems
  • up to 9% of men, and up to 3% of women 'take an alcoholic drink first thing in the morning', 32% of men and 16% of women meet clinical criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence over the course of their lifetime and more than 6.1 percent of New Zealanders suffer from substance abuse or dependence at some point in their life
  • the cost to New Zealand business of drug and alcohol abuse alone is conservatively estimated at $180 million. This does not include its contribution to workplace accidents and injury
  • the cost to New Zealand business of absenteeism from illness and injury was an estimated $3 billion

And that

  • employees with substance abuse problems can cost between 25 - 50% of their salary through low productivity, sickness and accidents
  • for every dollar invested a return of at least seven can be gained through in returning an affected employee to full productivity
  • unexpected absenteeism rises annually - in 2007 it rose to about 2.9 sick days for every 100 work days
